Dr Milewski Summer Newsletter
Greetings!
I love fireworks. I have been known to travel far and wide (well, to Edgewater Park) for spectacular firework displays, but nothing beats watching fireworks here in Medina.  There is something wonderfully familiar about driving over to the high school, fireworkssetting up our chairs then moving them repeatedly until my wife finds the perfect spot, and discovering we  ended up right  where we started. We inevitably find ourselves next to someone we know, and spend the evening  chatting and enjoying the light show in the sky.

Fireworks  today are such technologically advanced events ..musically coordinated,  computerized displays that dazzle. Yet a  big part of the attraction of the evening is sitting with neighbors and friends, and  sharing a moment of our lives.  To me, fireworks epitomize the best of small town America.

I like to think that our dental practice embraces both of these elements. We pride ourselves on knowing our patients, and treating each and every person as an individual.  We take the time to make sure they feel relaxed and at home.  At the same time, we are proud of the technological advances of our office. We do not jump on the band wagon of every razzle dazzle, over marketed dental gizmo. Rather, we  relentlessly study and analyze and only use  technology that will truly benefit our patient's dental health. We know  we offer our patients the best  possible dental care in a very warm, caring environment.

So this summer, whether you are enjoying a huge fireworks show, or just watching the kids run around the yard with sparklers, be thankful for small town America and all that it has to offer.  And if you see me moving my chair at the fireworks display, be sure to say hello!

On the Road Again...Going Fishing
Don't take a vacation from good dental hygiene! The following tips will make sure you return from your travels with great memories and a great smile!

  • Driving on vacation this summer? Remember to choose healthy snacks, staying away from high sugar drinks and food.
  • Travel size toothbrushes are easily found in the drugstores. But not all toothbrushes are created equal. Find one with soft bristles and a rounded edge that won't injure your gums.  And brush!  Twice a day!
  • If you are flying, remember the new restrictions for carry on toiletries! Travel sizes of tooth paste and mouthwash are readily available in drugstores and easily carried.
  • A vacation from work doesn't mean a vacation from flossing. I recommend flossing once a day, yes, even on vacation!
  • If you have a dental emergency while on vacation, the local hospital or dental society can be very helpful in referring a dentist for emergency care. I can always be reached by phone for advice or to answer a question. Remember, my phone number is on the back of your toothbrush we give you at your cleaning appointment,  so I am always easy to find!
  • If you are traveling outside of the country, it is best to have your teeth in great shape before leaving on your trip. Unfortunately, not all the countries of the world have the same standards of dental care as the United Sates. This article by the American Dental Association, Dental Care Away From Home recommends  resources to help you with dental problems when traveling abroad.
  • Remember, a vacation from work is not a vacation from good dental hygiene! Have fun, send us a postcard, and keep smiling!

Dear Dr. Milewski,

I just had a baby. At what age should I bring   my child in for his first dental visit?
                                     New Mom in Medina

Dear New Mom,
Congratulations on the birth of your child! We recommend you bring your child in to see us around the age of one, or about six months after their first tooth comes in!  This first visit will not involve any treatment or cleaning of your child's teeth, but will serve as a very non threatening fun introduction to the dentist.  Your child will sit on your lap in the dental chair, and will ride the chair up and down with you. I will "count" your child's teeth, which will give me the opportunity to do a visual exam of the baby's mouth. We can answer any specific  questions you may have regarding your baby..thumb sucking, dietary habits, dental hygiene, as well as determine if there are any developing situations.  Our goal is to make this first visit very fun, to foster a positive relationship between your child and our office.
Having children is the most rewarding part of my life! Just remember, that even though your baby will eventually sleep through the night....once your baby is a teenager, those sleepless nights start all over again! Gotta love parenthood.
Thanks for the great question, enjoy your movie tickets!
