Here’s to The Parents!

Parents form a bond with one another. A bond that doesn’t need words, but instantly elicits understanding and sympathy.  Just say the words “Science Project” and parents will start to twitch. Say “Sleepover” and any parent will suddenly feel sleep deprived.

Say “Drivers Permit” and every parent who has ever put their foot through the floorboard of their car pressing on an imaginary break will start to sweat.  February is Children’s Dental Health month, but I’d like to send a shout out to their parents. You have one of the hardest jobs in the world.  In an effort to make things a little easier, here are a few tips on helping your children keep their smiles healthy and bright.

A healthy smile starts young.  Don’t let your baby fall asleep with a bottle, and limit sugary juices.  Even before you see their first tooth, wipe your baby’s gums with a clean piece of moistened gauze or washcloth after feeding. Take your baby for their first dental visit within six months of their first tooth erupting. Make sure their first visits are enjoyable, setting the tone for a lifetime of visits to the dentist.

As your child grows, encourage healthy snacks and drinks. Supervise young children in brushing their teeth twice a day, and as they get older, check how well they’ve brushed. Use a fluoridated toothpaste and brush at least twice a day.  Kids are high tech…they love electric toothbrushes which often have a built in timer.  As your children grow, be sure they floss. Consider sealants to guard against decay.  Set an example by taking great care of your own teeth and gums.  And be sure that your entire family visits the dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and examination.

One of the best parts of being a dentist is getting to treat so many great kids, watching them grow up and being a part of their lives! I know being a parent isn’t easy, but it can be very rewarding!  Here’s to you, the parents who make it all happen.  You’re doing a wonderful job!  And if you need any ideas for a Dental Science Project, give me a call.  I know a couple of great ones!
