We know that a calcium rich diet helps our teeth and bones stay strong. But did you know that how you get your calcium matters too? In a recent study, people who got their calcium almost exclusively from supplements without coadministered Vitamin D were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with those who took no supplements. Yikes! Why not get your calcium the good old fashioned way…in food! Nutritional experts recommend most adults get about 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day preferably from food. Try to eat three cups a day of calcium rich food such as milk, cheese and yogurt. If you prefer vegetables, try broccoli, spinach, kale and Swiss chard.
