Adequate calcium in your diet is important for your dental health!  As we get older, we need calcium to prevent bone loss or osteoporosis. Did you know osteoporosis can also happen in the jaw bone and if it does, it may lead to your teeth becoming loose or falling out?

So be sure to get enough calcium…your teeth will thank you!

Lucky Elephants!

Elephants have more than a great memory.  Elephants are polyphydonts – mammals who have more than one set of adult teeth.
Elephants can grow new teeth up to six sets of teeth in their lifetime.  When a tooth is ground down, a new one pushes forward and takes its place.
We humans are not so lucky.  We only get one set of adult teeth, so we need to take care of them.
Brush and floss daily and be sure to see your smiling dentist for a regular checkup.

Don’t forget!

Did you know that Thomas Jefferson was an avid fossil collector?  When you walk into his home, Monticello, he had fossils of giant Mastadon teeth right by his front door.  Jefferson knew from studying the giant teeth that the Mastadon were herbivores.  Even Thomas Jefferson knew that our teeth were often a reflection of what we eat!

Kids will spend 8 minutes decorating their little brothers.  How about two minutes to brush their teeth?  We love this campaign promoting healthy habits in children.

Floss that Bridge!

August 27, 2012

This tip of the week comes from our great hygienist Kathleen.

Kathy says “Floss that Bridge When You Come to It!”

Flossing your bridge is important because decay can form at the base of the crowns that anchor your bridge. And keeping your gums around the bridge healthy is  important too.

Flossing your bridge is easy with a floss threader.  You can buy them at your local  drugstore. If you have questions about using a floss threader or caring for your bridge, just give us a call. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have about your dental health!

How can it be back to school time already? Summer went by far too fast!   We have had a great time seeing all the young patients in the office and enjoyed catching up with all their activities.  What a wonderful group of young people we have in our practice!  We’re always sorry to see you go, but know that you go back to school with three parts anticipation and one part dread. (We get the part where you don’t like to get up early!)

school-bus1Even though you are back to school and busy once again don’t forget to take care of your teeth.   Here’s a link to our blog post on healthy school snacks and to our older students here’s another  link to a recent post about energy drinks. Take time to brush and floss and try to make smart choices about what you eat.  Your teeth will thank you!If you are leaving town to head off to college, please be safe, be smart, and learn lots. If you are a bit younger and taking the big yellow bus or walking to school, please be safe, be smart and learn lots.  And if you are starting school for the very first time, we envy you. What an exciting adventure lies ahead!

To all our students..have a great year!  Post updates on what you are doing on our Facebook Wall. Made the honor roll or dean’s list? Let us help brag! Scored a goal in soccer? Let us join in cheering you on!  Have a part in a play or musical? Send us a picture! We enjoy interacting with you all on Facebook…stay in touch!

Here’s hoping this is the best school year ever!

Think your smile doesn’t matter? Experts tell us it does! In this age of digital communications, we use email and text messaging every day. And often those messages are misunderstood, because there is no facial expression or tone in those messages. So what did we invent to help?  The emoticons! Yes, the ubiquitous Smiley Face helps us smile even when we are not face to face! Your smile matters!
