Floss that Bridge!

August 27, 2012

This tip of the week comes from our great hygienist Kathleen.

Kathy says “Floss that Bridge When You Come to It!”

Flossing your bridge is important because decay can form at the base of the crowns that anchor your bridge. And keeping your gums around the bridge healthy is  important too.

Flossing your bridge is easy with a floss threader.  You can buy them at your local  drugstore. If you have questions about using a floss threader or caring for your bridge, just give us a call. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have about your dental health!

One smile = 2000 bars of chocolate?

One smile makes you feel as good as 2000 chocolate bars? 2000-chocolate-bars-is-one-smile4Studies done by British Researchers show it takes 2000 chocolate bars to make you feel as good as ONE smile! Since I am very careful of any studies I tell you about, I considered trying this test myself. (I know, what a selfless guy I am!)   Then sanity and my waistline intervened and I decided to take their word for it.  Just smile.  It makes you feel even better than chocolate.  I promise!

Have a question about your smile or want someone to help you test this theory?  Give us a call at (330)725-2242 We are always glad to help!

How can it be back to school time already? Summer went by far too fast!   We have had a great time seeing all the young patients in the office and enjoyed catching up with all their activities.  What a wonderful group of young people we have in our practice!  We’re always sorry to see you go, but know that you go back to school with three parts anticipation and one part dread. (We get the part where you don’t like to get up early!)

school-bus1Even though you are back to school and busy once again don’t forget to take care of your teeth.   Here’s a link to our blog post on healthy school snacks and to our older students here’s another  link to a recent post about energy drinks. Take time to brush and floss and try to make smart choices about what you eat.  Your teeth will thank you!If you are leaving town to head off to college, please be safe, be smart, and learn lots. If you are a bit younger and taking the big yellow bus or walking to school, please be safe, be smart and learn lots.  And if you are starting school for the very first time, we envy you. What an exciting adventure lies ahead!

To all our students..have a great year!  Post updates on what you are doing on our Facebook Wall. Made the honor roll or dean’s list? Let us help brag! Scored a goal in soccer? Let us join in cheering you on!  Have a part in a play or musical? Send us a picture! We enjoy interacting with you all on Facebook…stay in touch!

Here’s hoping this is the best school year ever!

Think your smile doesn’t matter? Experts tell us it does! In this age of digital communications, we use email and text messaging every day. And often those messages are misunderstood, because there is no facial expression or tone in those messages. So what did we invent to help?  The emoticons! Yes, the ubiquitous Smiley Face helps us smile even when we are not face to face! Your smile matters!

Ever heard the old adage  “He’s looking long in the tooth”?  This phrase is sometimes used to describe older persons, whose  gum disease causes gums to recede and teeth to appear longer.  Years of smoking, or drinking coffee or red wine can cause teeth to look yellow and stained which can also make you look older than you are. We may not be able to turn back the clock, but we can change our smile to look younger and healthier.

I know we talk to you a lot about flossing, but statistics show that only 13% of the population actually flosses on a regular basis. And it is critically important to stopping periodontal disease from developing. Healthy gums make a healthier you.  And a younger looking you.smile-medina-family-dentistry-copy
