A Tale of Two Turkeys

November 20, 2012

This past summer, we had a new visitor to our woods. A flock of turkeys took up residence and raised their poults under our watchful eye.  They snacked at our bird feeder and taught their babies to fly by jumping off our deck.  As you can see from this picture, they are beautiful birds and look surprisingly like the construction paper creations our kids made in school!

This Thanksgiving whether your turkeys are jumping off your deck or sitting on your table  surrounded by sweet potatoes, I know we will all be giving thanks for our many blessings. Being your dentist is at the top of my list. Being a part of your life and the lives of your family is a privilege I never take for granted. It’s the best part of being a dentist.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday filled with good company, good food, and great memories!  From all of us here at Medina Family Dentistry, have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Time for our Award Winning Candlelight Walk!

November 15, 2012

Did you know that our annual Candlelight Walk was just named one of the top 25 Christmas Celebrations by Midwest Living Magazine?  And it is no wonder! Each year more than 3000 lights are strung around the historic facade of our beautiful town square. Store fronts are decorated and a beautiful tree adorns our gazebo.

This weekend, November 16, 17th and 18th over a thousand luminaries (donated by AI Root of course!) will light our square, along with a parade, live nativity and of course a visit by Santa himself.  It’s a holiday tradition we never miss, and hope you don’t too!  Visit www.mainstreetmedina.com for details of all the fun events.  Hope we see you there!

It’s not just a cleaning!

Say “Go Blue” to an Ohio State fan and you get an immediate reaction.  Say “It’s Just a Cleaning” to a dental professional and you will get the same reaction!  We hope you understand that your regular dental re-care appointments are more than “Just a Cleaning”.  A typical re-care appointment in our office includes:

An update of your health history. Getting an updated health history from you helps Dr. Milewski and our hygienists understand the changes they may be seeing in your teeth and gums.  The medicine you take, any surgeries you may have had, any diagnosis of conditions or disease are all important for us to know. Many patients find it helpful to keep a list of medication and dosages, medical conditions and surgeries and bring those to their appointment.

Necessary X-rays. Taking diagnostic x-rays is an important step in identifying changes in the health of your teeth and gums.  Many oral diseases can’t be detected on the basis of a visual and physical examination  alone.  Dental X-rays are valuable in providing information about a patient’s oral health such as early-stage cavities,  gum diseases, infections or some types of tumors. How often dental X-rays should be taken depends on the patient’s  oral health condition, age, risk for disease and any signs and symptoms of oral disease that the patient might be  experiencing.

A professional cleaning. Yes, you clean your teeth every day. But your toothbrush and floss can’t do it all.  You’ve heard us talk about how plaque can build up on your teeth.  Well, over time that sticky plaque hardens into a substance called tartar, which can only be removed by our dental instruments.  Removing plaque, and tartar are very important in preventing gum disease and keeping your smile healthy and beautiful. Just ask Kim.  She’ll tell you!

An examination by Dr. Milewski. Dr. Milewski will examine your teeth and gums for decay and periodontal disease. He will also check the inside of your mouth for signs of oral cancer. With 40,000 people a year being diagnosed with oral cancer, this is  an important part of your examination.  After a careful evaluation of your oral health, Dr. Milewksi will discuss any    necessary treatment with you and help you understand your options.

Comprehensive lessons in oral care. If you’ve been in our office to have your teeth cleaned, then you have had intra oral pictures taken of your teeth.  Our cameras are specially made to take pictures of your teeth and gums so you can see and really understand what is happening with your dental health.  Our hygienists and Dr. Milewski give you updated information and techniques that you can use in your daily home care routine. We work with you to help you understand what needs to be done and why.  You’ll even get a new toothbrush, modeled here by our very own Kathy!

It’s not “Just a Cleaning”.  A Professional Hygiene Appointment is an  important part of staying healthy.  We know how busy you are.  But don’t forget in the hustle and bustle of your life to take time out for you.  Just give us a call and we can find a convenient appointment time.  A healthy mouth is part of a healthy you!

Hope you all have a B00-tiful Halloween!
